Midwest Field Report - December 2002
FIELD SERVICES
There have been increased questions regarding applying finishes
in cold weather. Due to the mild temperatures for the season, many
felt it was OK to apply coatings. It is never a good idea to apply
a finish if the temperature is below 50 degrees.
Increased requests for forms allowing specifying cedar in CSI format
were received and sent to architects. The WRCLA has CSI format for
specifying siding, trim, decking, and timbers.
Where and how to use laminated hollow Western Redcedar post was
discussed with several wholesale distributors. As with solid posts
and timbers, it is not recommended they be in ground contact when
used to support permanent structures such as decks.
An inspection was requested for finger-joined product when an architect
expressed concern about its performance. When it was discovered
it was not member product, the request was denied.
MARKET COMMENTS
Most retailers have stated the year has been OK to good and expect
the coming year to be as good or better. An increased number have
relied more on distribution to fill needs on an order-by-order basis
as opposed to increasing stocking levels.
One company in the pressure treating business, after converting
some of their facilities to ACQ, has slowed the conversions from
CCA due to resistance from their customers to pay the increased
cost for ACQ over CCA. There appears to be an attitude of wait until
"have to" by some to do the switch away from CCA.
With the increased concern regarding mold, there is an increase
in requests for information about mold and how to remove it from
siding and decks.
Details regarding the implementation and focus of the marketing
program have been requested.
Even with the increased cost of Western Red Cedar, some major distributors
experienced increased sales. Many are more concerned about availability
than costs.
EXHIBITIONS & MEETINGS
A seminar was completed for a local CSI chapter. Attendees were
architects and specifiers. Information on how to specify Western
Redcedar products for expected performance and installation was
covered. In addition, finish systems and expected performance of
each was reviewed. The information was well received and another
seminar will be scheduled.
COMPETITION
The increased usage of cement based siding products is well documented.
It is thought by some there has been more market share loss from
vinyl than cedar. It has not been verified either way. There is
an increase in the usage of products other than cedar for trim.
PROGRAM FEEDBACK
The desire for WRCLA product identification on each piece continues.
Very positive comments regarding the usefulness and quality of
the website continue.
Images were supplied to a company updating their displays.
The usual inquiries requesting assistance and information by phone,
e-mail, and FAX from homeowners, retailers, distributors, builders,
and architects were received and handled.
